Compost The Message
July '10
Eco pupils at a Sefton School witnessed at first hand how their garden waste is turned into reusable compost.
School children at Farnborough Road Juniors in
Southport visited Walkers Organic Solutions to learn more about the composting
process.
The visit was organised by Walkers Organic
Solutions following a promotion of the special tours in Sefton Council’s Big
Green Envelope.
The Big Green Envelope, which is made from
recycled paper, is a collection of information on environmental themes, events
and projects within Sefton and the region and sent to local schools.
Walkers Organic Solutions use The Big Green
Envelope to highlight their recycling and composting.
The business has been composting at their 28
acre site in Formby for more than eight years and composts about 30,000 tonnes
of vegetation and produce 50,000 tonnes of wood fuel each year. Much of this
green waste comes from homes across Sefton.
Recycling Officer, Anne-Marie Clegg, said:
"Visits like these show exactly how green garden waste is turned into
compost. Educating children at a young age about
recycling garden waste will have a positive impact on the future."
Eco pupils were given a tour of the site by
Pete Watts from Walkers Organic Solutions. He said: "The school children were very
keen to learn about the composting process and what happens to their green
waste when it is taken away.
Farnborough Road Junior School teacher, Lyz
Collins, said: "The children thoroughly enjoyed the tour of the site and
particularly liked making the plant pots.
"It brought home what happens when they
put out their garden waste in their green wheelie bins and each child is going
to feedback to their class about the trip and what happens to our green
waste."
